Philanthropic donation to support OA research in the Antarctic Ocean

On January 14, 2019, Dr. James McClintock, Endowed Professor of Polar and Marine Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, presented a gift of scientific equipment to climate change researchers at Palmer Station, Antarctica.

The recipient of the gift, Dr. Elizabeth Shadwick, has been collecting in situ water chemistry measurements under Antarctic sea ice using a number of submersible sensors in order to understand the carbonate system dynamics. The philanthropical donation of an accessory equipment to Dr. Shadwick’s work to keep her CO2-Pro™ CV sensor deployed for an additional year of data collection for her group.
Pro-Oceanus is proud to support the important research of Dr. Shadwick and other scientists, as well as the public outreach of individuals including Dr. McClintock to raise awareness of the issues the oceans currently face.The gift presentation took place during the 2019 Antarctic A&K Communicating Climate Change Cruise, a 14 day cruise from Southern Chile to the Antarctic circle and back, stopping at the US-operated Palmer Scientific Station. Dr. McClintock noted that “over the past 11 years of leading this effort – this year’s group of 200 guests from 10 countries were the most receptive yet to the critical needs of addressing climate change.” This is a promising statement and gives hope that the public is engaged in not only understanding the issues our planet faces, but also how to implement ideas that can positively impact the future.
