Reducing Anthropogenic CO2 Emissions to the Atmosphere

The Scenario

One highly promising solution for reducing anthropogenic input of CO2 to the atmosphere is to capture CO2 at the source and inject it into underground structures, a process known as carbon capture and storage. Not only does injection reduce CO2 emissions, the injected gas also can be used to enhance oil and gas recovery.

The Challenge

Once CO2 is injected underground, monitoring is necessary to ensure that the gas remains in the formation and does not leak back to the atmosphere or migrate into overlying aquafers. One low cost solution to monitoring is measurement of CO2concentration and gas pressure in observation wells both in sub-surface soil and water and brine. The sensor must be extremely robust, corrosion resistant, and capable of operating in extremes of temperature.

The Solution

Pro-Oceanus scientists and engineers developed the Mini-Pro CO2 CCS™ featuring a robust, waterproof housing, a selection of output formats, a broad range of CO2concentrations in the gas phase in ppm or % CO2 and operation at temperatures from -2 to 50 °C. In addition to providing gas phase CO2 levels, the Mini-Pro CO2CCS™ provides gas phase pressure. At only 2 inches in diameter the instrument fits most bore holes and offers a robust, low cost and accurate method for monitoring CO2 storage.

Summary

Pro-Oceanus scientists and engineers have worked with industry to develop a CO2sensor for monitoring carbon capture and storage sites.
